It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will take a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a six-month pause that began in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or more to compensate for scheduling.
It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Today, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
