Lifetime of Salary Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Enter Wealthiest 10%, Report Reveals

According to new research, the typical earner in the UK would require over five decades of income to reach the wealth level of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Expanding Financial Divide Through the Years

The analysis reviewed wealth distribution information covering the 2020-22 timeframe and discovered that back in 2006-08, it would have needed nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to enter the richest segment of the economic ladder.

An economic expert associated with the report commented: "Financial divides in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee setting aside their entire income across their entire working life would continue to be incapable to achieve the peak of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Financial Disparity

The study found that the difference between the wealth of the median citizen and an individual in the wealthiest decile was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had widened to £1.3m in real terms by 2020-22.

The economist further stated: "These differences are especially alarming as wealth mobility in Britain is limited – people that start life well-off tend to stay wealthy, and conversely applies."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Despite the wealth gap widening in actual numbers, the portion of total wealth in the UK owned by the richest households – called "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s era," as stated in the research.

Throughout these years, complete net worth in the UK surged from three times the yearly economic output, to approximately 7.5x.

Drivers of Financial Divide

So-called "passive" appreciation, by means of increasing property values and adjustments to pension valuations, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity from 2010 onward, as stated in the analysis.

These gains typically went to elderly homeowners, the study demonstrates – worsening the generational financial disparity.

Generational Wealth Disparities

The average wealth gap between thirty-somethings and sixty-somethings more than doubled in actual value, from £135k in pre-financial crisis, to £310k.

Regional Differences

There were also significant regional variations, with the median value of net worth in 2020-22 standing at £290k in south-east England, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, versus 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

Health Crisis Years Impact

During the pandemic, when millions of workers were supported by the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the information reveals many households were in a position to set aside money, enhancing their financial standing.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, however. "The average household in the lowest-income quintile saw their liquid savings rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the pre-crisis period. Conversely, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the report finds.
